Tip 1. Check To See Live Termites

Sydney termites may be found in cavities. While termites can attack any cellulosic material, older, softer wood and timbers are more vulnerable. Buckled or blistered paintwork which demonstrates soft timber it covers if gently prodded, goes hand in hand here and is also an indicator.

Tip 2. Look For Swarming Alates And Alate Wings

When a Sydney termite nest usually reaches two to three hundred thousand or a million termite individuals in the case of formosan subterranean termites, worker or soldiers termites grow wings pair off and leave the termite nest to start new colonies. Also called reproductives, alates leave their nest in their hundreds, thousands and even hundreds of thousands during the first warmer days of spring.
Alate wings drop off soon after they have flown from the nest (they de-alate). Because alates are attracted to light and congregate together, the wings usually gather in one spot such as on a window-sill.

Tip 3. See If You Can Find Any Mud Tunnels

Sydney Australia termites require dark, moist and humid environments to survive. Made of termite grit, spit and excrement, connecting mud tunnels enable termites to cross open terrain. These tunnels are also called galleries and are usually found at a building’s foundations running in lines up walls.

Tip 4. Check For Termite Frass Near The Foundation

This is Sydney termite excrement which looks a bit like tin wood shavings and can form in small piles usually also near a building’s foundations or where the floor meets a wall. Carefully examine any discolored and hollowed out timbers. Wood and timber that is visibly discolored and dirty looking or hollowed out may indicate a termite infestation.

Research As Many Exterminators As Possible

Thankfully Sydney termites work slowly and your house will not collapse over night. Take a little extra time to research as many exterminators in your area. Research salient issues such as price, customer reviews, methods for extermination, and the ability of the company for create a protection plan that fits your specific needs.

Be Wary Of Sydney Exterminator Companies Without A Listed Number

It is important to appreciate that no two Sydney Australia exterminator companies are the same in regards to how the companies will handle your infestation problem. Additionally, there are some indications that speak to the reliability of a company. Be wary of exterminator companies that do not have their number listed in the phone book, quote prices based on the amount of materials used, or claim to have a secret formula. All termiticides (termite chemical insecticide) must be filed and registered with the Environmental Protection Agency. Ask to see termites-pictures and information on the can of the chemical they intend to use as this should be clearly labeled with information.

Ensure The Sydney Company Can Tailor A Program

There are several types of house termites is Sydney Australia and several different forms of termiticides on the market. For example, termiticides can take powdered forms and liquid forms. There are also green treatments. Also, the manner in which they are applied to kill the termites is important to note. If your termites are originating from a nest far from your home, a defensive strategy should be employed. The exterminator should create a termiticide barrier around the nest, effectively cutting off the nest from any access to your home. If the termite nest is in your home, termiticide can be applied directly on the source or fumigation may be necessary. Make sure that the exterminator company has a program that will suit your needs and you are truly comfortable with what is selected. What will work for you may not work for your neighbor from a strategic and lifestyle point of view.

So what about the cost? Just as a repair cost can vary from say car mechanic to mechanic, so too can the cost for termite protection service vary. Not only can prices vary for the same treatment, but not all pest managers have all termite elimination methods in their arsenal and may steer you to their familiar territory of what has worked for them in the past. Cheapest is not necessarily best. Ask questions about what the exterminator company intend to do and use and why.

A Large Sydney Company May Have More Resources

Size of the Sydney AU company is also worth mentioning. Most National Standards advise having a prevention inspection at least once a year. This means that notwithstanding any immediate termite treatments in the event of termite discovery on your property, you are going to have an ongoing relationship with the company, just like your car mechanic. Make sure the chemistry is right. A large company may have more resources to offer but may send different pest managers each time who are not familiar with your specific circumstances. Sure a professional Sydney company writes things down each site visit, but you may need to reinforce specific issues that are important to you such as for example making them aware of favorite outdoor areas of small children and pets. A small company may be a family business dependent on experience and knowledge of one or two Managers. They need your business and may provide a greater level of customer service. Make sure the pest manager has at least two years on site experience with termite prevention and elimination. He/she should also belong to a reputable Pest Association in Sydney AU.

Check The Terms Of The Sydney Contact

One of the most critical points is a comprehensive, written report. No matter what Sydney AU company is selected they should take at least an hour to inspect your property carefully. This means attics, basements and grounds should be included. All findings should be sent to you in writing as a report on your property. This information should also include specific termites – pictures and information, any other termite treatments in the area with a good demonstrated understanding of the local area in context of termites, any local termite infestations and level of risk of termite hazard.

Have the Sydney exterminator company draft a contract for you to carefully read yourself before commencement. You should compare the terms of each contract you acquire and pick the one that seems the most fair to you. No exterminator company can actually guarantee termites will not infest or re-infest your property, but specific treatment promised needs to be assessed as being satisfactorily completed.

Termites Are Insects That Eat Wood

Although most people have heard of termites, many have never seen a termite. A termite is just an insect that eats wood? Oddly enough, a termite doesn’t actually eat wood. A termite uses enzymes in its saliva to break down the cellulose material in dry wood and other plant material. Sometimes referred to as white ants, termites can be found in almost any climate. Termites are typically between 1/8 of an inch to an inch long and can range anywhere from a few thousand to over a million in a single colony. If you live in arid climates drywood termites can begin chewing their way through wood-frame homes, outdoor sheds, drywall and even trees and plants around Sydney Australia.

Telltale Signs That You May Have Termites

There are a few telltale signs that termites have taken up residence in your Sydney home or other areas of your property. For most homeowners, the most common sign you may have a termite problem are termite tubes. For homes affected by subterranean termites, these termite tubes can be seen running up the exterior stem wall (pictured above) of a home. These tubes may also be present on the interior of a home, located on the baseboards, carpet or drywall. In extreme cases, termites can create large nests (termites create the largest nest of any insect) indicated large mounds of mud in fields and other wooded areas. Although you may see these signs on your property, it’s difficult to gauge the severity of the damages by these signs alone.

The Types Of Termite Damage Can Vary Greatly

Although termites in Sydney Australia only cause damage to wood and other related materials, how that damage affects the homeowner can vary greatly. Minor damage can include termite tubes on interior or exterior walls that can be simply cleaned up with a brush, water and a mild detergent. Termites damage can also be seen in the drywall of your home, either by the presence of termite tubes or small tunnels in the drywall. This can be repaired with some spackle and a little touch-up paint. In severe cases, termite damage could include the complete destruction of sections of drywall and even structural damage to wood framing or other wooden structures. Repair costs for these heavily damaged areas can range in thousands. It’s important that termite treatment is done regularly in order to avoid these large termite repairs.

There Are A Few Termite Treatment Options Available

There are a few termite treatment options to consider in Sydney AU if you find signs of termites in your home or property. For the do-it-yourselfer, there are a wide variety of companies that supply homeowners with chemicals and baiting systems that can be effective against termite intrusion. Some time and energy must be spent to ensure your chemical delivery methods and baiting systems are installed properly. This may not be the most preferred method for less experienced homeowners. Many companies will come to you home and provide you with a 1-time treatment and baiting solution that can prevent termite infestation for 3-5 years. Although this can be a good option for some homeowners, treatment must be reapplied every few years. One of the best services provided by termite companies is the termite warranty. Termite warranties are offered by experienced termite control companies for a yearly fee. Termite treatment is done on the initial visit and any other baiting, treatment and repair services can be done at no additional costs. This is often the preferred method for most homeowners, as it provides piece of mind for all possible termite problems.

Termite Damage and Treatment Can Range Considerably Depending On The Severity Of The Damage

The cost of Sydney termite damage and treatment can range considerably based on the type and severity of the damage. The number of termites in and around the home in Australia. The amount of time that has passed since the last treatment and even the Sydney Australia company doing the treatment and repairs. If damages are minor, homeowners can save considerably on costs by doing some repairs themselves. For minor to moderate drywall damage, homeowners can visit their local home improvement store for all the materials needed to the repairs themselves. For more structural or extreme damages, Termite Treatment Cost Solutions suggests researching handyman services in your area that have a proven track record of repairs related to termites or water damage. These independent contractors do very good work and can help save you hundreds on materials and labor costs. Recommendations from friends and relatives can also help bring down costs and increase quality and piece of mind with this option. Finally, there are many termite companies that offer a wide range of services from 1 time treatments, warranty treatments, severe baiting and treatment and repairs services.

Termite Inspections Can Prevent Infestations

A termite inspection serves many purposes. Regular termite inspections can help prevent future infestations, determine the size and severity of a current infestation and identify what, if any, termite damage may already be present. The first step in a termite inspection is to look for signs of termites in and around your property. Termite tubes are the most common signs of a current termite infestation, although other signs may be present depending on how long termites have been eating away. Also known as mud tubes, termite tubes are tiny trails that run up the interior and exterior of the home. The composition of these tubes is termite saliva and partially digested wood from the colony, along with other organic material that may be present.

Just because termites are subterranean insects doesn’t mean there won’t be signs of them above ground. It is important to do a thorough check of your home, both indoors and outdoors when inspecting for termites. The information below will help you identify where you should look to ensure you perform the most detailed inspection possible.

The First Signs Of Termites Show Up Outside

The first place a homeowner should inspect is the exterior of the Sydney home. The first signs of termites typically show up outside and the exterior of the home tends to be fairly easy to inspect. The perimeter of the home should be inspected thoroughly. Be sure to check the foundation or stem wall for signs of termite tubes. It is also important to remove all dead brush from the perimeter of the home, as this can be a perfect place for termites to build their colonies. If your home has wood or plastic siding, be sure to check the base of the siding to look for any wood decay or other signs of termites. Once you’ve inspected the exterior, you’ll be able to move inside.

The Interior Search For Termites Can Be More Time Consuming

The interior search for termites can be more time consuming. Signs of termites in the Sydney Australia home may be more difficult to identify for a variety of reasons. Your inspection should include every room in the house, making sure to inspect under beds, behind curtains, inside cabinets and behind appliances. Termite tubes, like on the exterior of the home, can be present on drywall or on floor boards throughout the home. You should also look for imperfections in the wood and drywall of each room. The easiest way to identify these imperfections is to shine a flashlight along the length of the wall to identify any indentations or areas that may be raised. Applying a little pressure with your finger to any areas that look affected will help to identify the severity of the damage.

Obviously for Sydney homes that have concrete slab foundations, crawl spaces will not be present, but it’s important that any tight places around the home be checked as well. You’ll need a flashlight and a long tool; a crowbar or long screwdriver will work. You’ll also want to put on long pants and a long sleeve shirt to keep the dirt off. Like your inspections of the interior and exterior, you’re looking for termite tubes running from the ground up the side of the foundation or pillars underneath the home. If you find signs of termites, use your tool to test the density of the wood close to the termite tubes or dig a trench along the foundation to see if you can find termites. This will help determine the severity of the infestation or damage.

The attic should be the final place to look. Even though this is the highest point in your home, termites can still find their way into your attic. Referring back to the techniques you used for your crawl space inspection, check the attic for termite tubes, mud, termites or decayed wood. If you come across any problem areas, be sure to check the density of the affected wood.

Termite Inspections Should Be Conducted Every 12 Months

The time it takes to conduct a termite inspection depends on a few factors. Taking the size, complexity and number of places to look, a typically inspection can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours. These inspections should be conducted every twelve months to ensure you stay ahead of any termite problems. If you live in arid climates like the desert, termites are almost an inevitability. If you’re deciding between doing the inspection yourself or hiring a professional, here are a few things you should consider.

The size of your Sydney Australia home should be the first thing you consider. If your home is 1,500 square feet or 5,000, this factor alone can make a do-it-yourself termite inspection more hassle than it’s worth. You’ll also want to assess your accessibility to the areas of your home. Some attics do not have adequate rooms to move and crawl spaces could be so tight that some adults wouldn’t fit through the opening. What year was your home built? This should also be considered, as some older homes can have unique areas that are difficult to access. Plant life around the property can also make it difficult to inspect the entire perimeter of the home.

Hire A Qualified Termite Specialist To Conduct The Inspection

If a do-it-yourself termite inspection seems too time consuming or difficult, you may want to hire a qualified termite specialty in Sydney AU to conduct the inspection. In some cases, homeowners may find an initial termite inspection is free, with the option to have the same professional treat for termites at a later date. Some homeowners may need a termite inspection report to be used when selling property. In these cases, only a licensed termite company can provide you with one.

The termite inspection report is a detailed report of your termite problem. Termite inspection reports are not designed to treat or eliminate termites; rather they provide you with an idea of your current termite problem. These reports can help you find termites at an early stage to reduce or eliminate the possibility for termite damage or high costs in the future.

The Best Treatment Is Termite Prevention

A Sydney termite inspection report can also help you identify any high risk areas where termites have colonized in and around your property. You’ll find out the types of termites on your property and the specialist will help you understand the extent of any damage that may have already been caused. Lastly, the report will identify if any treatments have been done in the past and provide the homeowner with treatment recommendations moving forward.

Whether you choose a qualified professional in Sydney Australia or decide to conduct your own inspection, the regular termite inspection can help homeowners save hundreds on termite treatment costs in the future. These inspections can also give homeowners piece of mind knowing that their house is safe from these wood eating insects. One of the best termite treatments is termite prevention and the termite inspection is the best option!

Termites Cause Serious Damage To Property

Generally, termites in Sydney Australia are considered to be social insects that usually feed on dead plant materials. These termites would often eat dead wood from plants, leaf litter, soil, and even animal manure. Termites are ecologically important because of their ability to recycle wood; however, they are also considered as pests because of the serious damages that they can cause to buildings and homes.

Termites Are Fast Multiplying Insects

Termites live in colonies just like ants. Sydney Termites are fast multiplying insects wherein it can begin as a small group and evolve into a large group of termites. A typical colony of termites would include nymphs or young termites, workers or blind termites that work for the colony by looking for food sources, soldiers that protect the colony and reproductive termites that increase the number of termites in the colony. In some cases, termites are called as white ants. However, termites are not related to the family of ants.

The Queen Can Produce About A Thousand Eggs A Day

Since termites are social insects, they have social classes, generally as what was mentioned a while ago. Termites designate their queen termite from the class of reproductive termites. The queen has the greatest capability of producing more termites. Approximately, the queen can reproduce about a thousand of eggs per day. The queen has a large distended abdomen which is a distinct characteristic for the queen termite. Because there is a queen, there is also a king termite that continuously mates with the queen to lay more eggs. The king termite does not significantly increase in size unlike the queen.

The Worker Class Of Termites Are Considered To Be The Most Powerful
